Running Buddy
A running buddy escorts GOTR girls in the achievement of their 5K event. They provide encouragement and lots of high-five's throughout the race and especially at the finish line.
  • Participation as a Running Buddy is contingent upon clean background check.
  • Meet the girl you will be running with once prior to 5K - this means going out to the school she runs with and meeting her the week before the race at her last practice.
  • Running or walking with your participant at the 5K, cheering her on, helping her do her very best!
  • If you would like to be a Running Buddy, please download the registration form (page 1 and page 2) and send, fax or email using the contact information on the first page of the form.
  • We will contact you when we receive it with more information.
5K Support Volunteer
These volunteers work hand-in-hand with the 5K Organizing Team to put on a successful 5K event.  These volunteers work only the day of the event.  Jobs we need help with on the day of the event include:
  • Making and hanging decorations,
  • Setting up the Start and Finish lines
  • Handing out goody bags and medals to the finishers
  • Staffing water stops and tables
  • Food service and preparation
  • Course volunteers to set up, direct and cheer on the girls
  • Registration and check-in volunteers
  • Clean up!

The Outreach Team
The Outreach Team works hand in hand with the GOTR Staff to build comprehensive council-wide community collaborations, as well as a building an organization that has a proven, positive community impact.  Volunteers interested in this team will:

  • Have experience in marketing, outreach or communications
  • Attend monthly meetings and events
  • Have a desire to build relationships with community organizations
  • Know the community and its strengths and how these would support the Girls on the Run mission.
Time Commitment
  • 1 year commitment
  • Once a month for 1 hour
  • Staffing community events (2-4 hours/month)

The Programming and Personnel Team
This team is dedicated to retaining and hiring highly-qualified, vibrant, productive, and well-compensated staff & a well-supported volunteer base.  In addition, this team works on the organization's demonstrated commitment to integrity-driven, inclusive programming.

 Volunteers interested in this team will:

  • Have experience in hiring and working with staff and/or volunteers
  • Have knowledge of volunteer recruitment, retention and communication
  • Be interested in the nuts and bolts of our program (training coaches, putting together materials, etc.)
  • Be reflective
  • Understand and/or be willing to learn how our program is delivered and be open to improving upon the model with each season.
Time Commitment
  • 1 year commitment - 2 seasons
  • Once a month for 2 hours
  • 2-3 times a week 2 to 3 weeks out from the start of the season
  • 3 hours the weekend of Coaches Training
  • 3-6 hours the 2 weeks before Coaches Training

The Development Team

Together with GOTR of WNC staff, the Development Team is charged with implementing successful fund-raising thru highly visible events, building economic sustainability and finding strategic, diverse financial support for the organization.  Volunteers interested in serving on this team will:

  • Be interested in planning and organizing fundraising events
  • Attend monthly meetings and events (1-3 hours a month)
  • Solicit donations, market Girls on the Run and personally network
  • Have the ability to follow-through on short-term and long term projects
  • Be an innovative thinker!! Marketing and Sales skills a plus
  • Have the knowledge of, or desire to learn, about grant writing process
  • Have the ability & desire to research sources of funds and communicate convincingly the value of GOTR® -WNC

The 5K Organizing Team

The 5K Team organizes, plans and implements 5K day activities. This committee works hand in hand with the GOTR Staff to ensure a successful Girls on the Run end of season event for our over 500 girls and their running buddies. Volunteers interested in this team will:

  • Be interested in planning and organizing events
  • Attend monthly meetings and events
  • Have a desire to recruit, train and retain volunteers
  • Enjoy working with others to complete a multi-faceted task
  • Use their knowledge of the community to promote the event
Time Commitment
  • 1 year commitment - 2 races
  • Once a month for 2 hours
  • 2-3 times a week 2 to 3 weeks out from the race
  • 3 hours the Friday before the race
